Answer – Pollution is the release of toxic or harmful substances into the environment to an extent that it causes damage to man and his resources.

bi. Name two pollutants of the soil

Answer – Two soil pollutants are: Sewage and refuse.

ii. State three effects of soil pollution or soil organisms

Answer –

• Soil pollution by sewage and refuse could lead to the spread of disease vectors and their pathogens.
• Soil pollution by pesticides and fertilizers may cause the death of soil organisms and may also increase soil acidity.
• Soil pollution by chemicals causes the death of plants and animals.

ci. List two sources of noise pollution

Answer – The sources of noise pollution are: Aeroplanes, Trains, Car-horns and Sirens, Loudspeakers, Generators.

ii. List three ways by which noise pollution can be minimized

Answer –

• Installation of soundproof generators
• Legislation on the use of loudspeakers in public places
• Airports should be sited away from residential areas.
