- Gas volume-Gas Volume Calculations
In this type of reaction, only volumes of reactants and products are involved.
Example 6.5.1:
40 cm3 of nitrogen gas reacts with 60 cm3 of hydrogen gas to form ammonia gas. Calculate the volume of unused and the volume of ammonia formed at the same temperature and pressure.
N2[g] | + | 3H2[g] | → | 2NH3[g]
By Gay Lussac’s law | 1 vol | 3 vols | 2 vols
40 cm3 | 60 cm3 |
Solution
From Gay Lussac’s Law
1 cm3 of N2 reacts with 3 cm3 of H2 to produce 2 cm3 of NH3.
Therefore 20 cm3 of N2 reacts with 60 cm3 of H2 to produce 40 cm3 of NH3.
