Characteristic Properties of Transition Elements:
The properties that are characteristic of transition elements and their compounds are as follows:
1. Variable Oxidation State:
Transition metals exhibit variable oxidation states because the 4s and 3d electrons are available for bond formation. Most transition elements show a common oxidation state of +2 which corresponds to the removal of the 4s2 electrons.
Manganese forms the highest oxidation state of +7 with the electronic configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d5 .
Elements with variable oxidation states are typical transition elements, since scandium and zinc form only Sc3+ and Zn2+ respectively, they are not typical transition elements.
