Evaluation Questions

    1. (a) Why is a table of elements based on atomic numbers more orderly than a table of elements based on relative atomic masses?

Answer:  A table of elements based on atomic numbers is more orderly than a table of elements based on relative atomic masses because there were no gaps between the elements as elements found in recent times like gallium and germanium were not fitted exactly.

    (b) Mendeleev periodic table was arranged in order of their ____________

    Answer:  Increasing relative atomic mass

    2. Name four scientists whose work could be associated with the periodic table.

Answer:  John Datton, Berzellins, Dobereineirs, Demitrimendeleev, John A. Newlands Lothermeyer

    3. (a) Define the periodic law of elements

Answer:  The periodic law states that the properties of the elements are a periodic function of their atomic number.

    (b) The atomic number of an element x is 14, and its relative atomic mass is 28. How many electron cells does ‘X’ have?

    (i) How many

    Answer: 14

(ii) Write the electronic configuration of an atom of x

    Answer:  2, 8, 4

(iii) Will x react in an electrovalent or covalent manner? Give reasons for your answer.

    Answer:

X can react in both electrovalent and covalent manner due to its known property as a metalloid i.e. it can act as both a metal (electrovalent manner) and non-metal (covalent manner).
