This is the energy required to remove the most loosely bound electrons from a gaseous atom to form a positive ion. The process is endothermic.
The first ionization energy of an element is the amount of energy required to remove one electron from each atom in a mole of gaseous atoms, producing one mole of gaseous ions with a positive charge.
The value of energy depends on the energy level and sub-level occupied by the electron in its lowest state and also the nuclear charge.
For example, sodium has 11 electrons 2, 8, 1 and lithium has 3 electrons
