  • Oxidation-Reduction Reaction (Redox Reaction)
  • Definition of Oxidation
  • Definition of Reduction

9. Oxidation-Reduction Reaction (Redox Reaction):

The word REDOX is an abbreviation for reduction/oxidation reaction

“RED” – Reduction

“OX” – Oxidation

The two processes occur simultaneously in the same reaction. As one substituent is transferring or losing its electrons, the other is accepting or gaining electrons.

Most reactions are redox reactions, except neutralization and precipitation reactions.

Redox reaction can be explained in four different ways;

1. Redox in terms of the addition or removal of oxygen and hydrogen.

2. Redox in terms of change in oxidation number.

3. Redox in terms of addition or removal of electronegative and electropositive elements.

4. Redox in terms of electron transfer.

Note: The substance that undergoes oxidation or is oxidized is a reducing agent and that which is reduced or undergoes reduction is an oxidizing agent.

Definition of Oxidation:

Oxidation can be defined as:

1. Addition of oxygen to a substance.

2. Removal of hydrogen from a substance.

3. Addition of electronegative elements.

4. The removal of electropositive elements.

5. Loss of electrons.

6. Increase in oxidation number.

Definition of Reduction:

Reduction can be defined as:

1. Removal of oxygen from a substance

2. Addition of hydrogen to a substance.

3. Removal of electronegative elements.

4. Addition of electropositive elements

5. Gain of electrons

6. Decrease in oxidation number

Both reactions go hand in hand (i.e. are complementary), they are both referred to as Redox reaction.

I. Addition of Oxygen to a Substance:

Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to a substance while reduction is the removal of oxygen from a substance.

The donor of oxygen is the oxidizing agent while the acceptor of oxygen is the reducing agent
