(a) What are the main pollutants in air?

Answer: Smoke, soot, dust, CO2, CO, SO2, NO, NO2, CFCs and hydrocarbons

(b) What is acid rain?

Answer:  Acid rain occurs when gasses in the air (SO2, SO3, NO2 etc.) dissolve in the rainwater.

Question 2

Give the cause and environmental hazard of each of the following

(a) Greenhouse effect

Answer:
Cause
– Atmospheric pollutants CO2 & CH4
Hazards – Flooding, rise in sea level, global warming, and melting of ice caps on mountains

(b) Depletion of ozone layer

Answer:
Cause – CFCs (Chloro-fluoro carbons)
Hazards – Skin cancer, sunburns, destruction of Food chain, Hindering of photosynthesis.

(a) What is pollution?

Answer:

Pollution is the process in which the quality of the environment is lowered due to the addition of impurities by man which constitutes a danger to our health or natural resources.

(b) List the four types of pollution

Answer:

– Water Pollution
– Land Pollution
– Air Pollution
– Noise Pollution

(c) Give two examples of air pollutants that cause acid rain

Answer: SO2 and NO2

(a) Give two examples of soil pollutants and explain why they are pollutants.

Answer:

Refuse – provide breeding grounds for insects and harbours germs

Pesticides and herbicides – causes death of aquatic lives

Give two ways by which pollution can be prevented.

 Answer:

– Indiscriminate use of pesticides and herbicides must be discouraged
– Government should guide against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and chemicals
