Topic Content:

  • Meaning of Solubility
  • Saturated and Unsaturated Solution
  • Supersaturated Solution
  • Determination of Solubility

The solubility of a solute in a solvent at a particular temperature is the maximum amount of the solute in moles or grams that will saturate 1 dm3 of the solvent at that temperature.

Although some substances are soluble in water, some are more soluble than others. Solubility is a means of comparing the extent to which different solutes can dissolve in a particular solvent at a given temperature.

Saturated and Unsaturated Solution:

Table salt (NaCl) readily dissolves in water. For example, if you have a beaker of water and you add salt and stir until it dissolves. You keep adding salt till you get to a point where no more salt will dissolve, irrespective of how vigorously you stir it.
