water 2

Water is by far the most abundant substance in plant and animal tissues. Over 80% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. Water is used in everyday life like drinking, washing, cleaning, cooking, dyeing, and as a solvent in industrial processes.

Water is referred to as a universal solvent because it dissolves most substances.

Types of Water:

There are two types of water

  1. Natural water
  2. Treated water

1. Natural Water:

Natural water includes rainwater, spring water, lake, seawater and well water.

Rainwater is the purest form of natural water because it is formed as a result of the condensation of water vapour in the atmosphere.

Springwater is a good source of drinking water because it contains little suspended impurities. Well water contains a lot of clay and other minerals salts. River water, lake water, and seawater contain a lot of dissolved air, mineral salt, and bacterial and organic remains.

2. Treated Water:

This type of water is usually prepared for special purposes e.g. distilled water, pipe-borne water, and chlorinated water, which is used in swimming pools.
