Alkanols belong to a group of organic (carbon) compounds known as alcohols. Alkanols are a homologous series in which one or more hydrogen atoms of an alkane have been replaced by one or more hydroxyl (OH) groups. The general molecular formula of alkanols is CnH2n+1OH also ROH where R is CnH2n+1 (n=1, 2, 3…). The functional group of the alkanols homologous series is the hydroxyl, OH group.
Classification of Alkanols:
Based on the Position of the Functional Group – OH:
Aliphatic alcohols are classified as primary, secondary and tertiary.
Primary Alkanols have the general molecular formula R-OH where R is alkyl.
