Preparation of Ethanol
Topic Content:
- Preparation of Ethanol by Ethene
- Preparation of Ethanol by FermentationFermentation is a natural process through which microorganisms like yeast and bacteria convert carbs — such as starch and sugar — into alcohol or acids, anaerobically releasing energy. More
Preparation of Ethanol by Ethene:
Ethanol is prepared by reacting ethene with steam in the presence of solid silicon dioxide coated with phosphoric (V) acid. The reaction is reversible.
\( \scriptsize \underset{ethene}{CH_2=CH_{2(g)}} \: + \: \underset{steam}{H_2O_{(g)}} \overset{H_3PO_4}{\normalsize \leftrightharpoons} \underset{ethanol}{CH_3CH_2OH_{(l)}} \)
