  • Laboratory Preparation of Ammonia
  • Drying of Ammonia Gas
  • Industrial Production of Ammonia

Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3 and a very important chemical in chemistry.

Laboratory Preparation of Ammonia:

prepare ammonia from ammonium chloride
Preparation of ammonia from ammonium chloride

Ammonia is prepared in the laboratory by heating an ammonium salt with slaked lime [Ca(OH)2 ] or a strong alkali e.g. sodium hydroxide. Slaked lime is preferred because it is cheap and not deliquescent like other caustic alkalis.

Drying of Ammonia Gas:

The drying agent used for ammonia gas is calcium oxide, CaO (quick lime). Other drying agents such as concentrated tetraoxosulphate(VI) acid or phosphorus(V) oxide or fused calcium chloride cannot dry ammonia gas.
