Theory Questions & Answers

1. (a). Describe a laboratory preparation of trioxonitrate(V) acid.

Answer:

Trioxonitrate(V) acid is prepared in the laboratory by displaying the acid from trioxonitrate(V) salt using conc. Tetraoxosulphate(VI) acid of potassium or sodium is heated with conc. Tetraoxosulphate(VI) acid.

NaNO3(aq) + HaSO4(aq) →  NaHSO4(aq) + HNO3(aq)

(b). Explain why the trioxonitrate(V) acid is a strong acid.

Answer: Trioxonitrate (V) acid is a strong acid because it ionizes completely to form hydrogen and trioxonitrate (V) ions.

2. (a). Give three physical properties of trioxonitrate(V) acid

Answer:

i. Trioxonitrate(V) acid is a fuming liquid with a sharp choking smell

ii. It is highly corrosive

iii. It has a boiling point of 86ºC and a freezing point of -47ºC

(b). Give three chemical properties of trioxonitrate(V) acid

Answer:

i. Trioxonitrate(V) acid reacts with bases to form salt and water only.

ii. It reacts with metals above hydrogen to liberate hydrogen gas.

iii. It reacts with metallic trioxocarbonate(IV) to liberate carbon(IV) oxide gas.

3. Give three uses of trioxonitrate(V) acid

Answer:

  • It is used in making explosives such as TNT
  • It is used in making artificial fibres such as Nylon
  • It is used as a chemical doping agent in electrochemistry

4. Describe the manufacture of ammonia by the Haber process

Answer:

Haber process of manufacturing ammonia utilizes free Nitrogen from the air.

N2(g)  +  3H2(g) \( \leftrightharpoons\) 2NH3(g)

Conditions for maximum yield

  • Temperature of 450ºC
  • Pressure of 200atm
  • Iron catalyst

5. State 3 physical properties of ammonia

Answer:

  • Ammonia is a colourless gas with a sharp choking smell
  • It turns moist red litmus paper blue
  • It has a boiling point of -33.35ºC and freezing point of -77.7ºC
