Chlorine is the most important member of halogens. It does not occur freely in nature because it is too reactive. Chlorine is found in combined form as chlorides – the abundant being sodium chloride.
Laboratory Preparation of Chlorine:
In the laboratory, Cl2 gas is prepared by heating concentrated hydrochloric acid with a strong oxidizing agent like manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2), potassium tetraoxomanganate(VII), KMnO4 or lead(IV) oxide PbO2.
