Theory Questions & Answers

1. What is the group name for the elements in group 7 elements of the periodic table?

Answer: Halogens

2. What is the oxidation number shown by the halogens in their compounds?

Answer: –1

3. Which member of the halogens sublimes at room temperature?

Answer:  Iodine and astatine

4. What would you observe when chlorine water is added to the solution of potassium iodide?

Answer: Chloride will displace iodine from its salt to be KCl instead of KI

5. Name two types of reactions undergone by the halogens.

Answer: Combination reaction with metals to form salts

6. (a)

(i). Explain briefly the physical properties of the halogens.

Answer:

There is a gradual gradation in the physical properties of halogens down the group

There is a gradual darkening in the colour of hydrogens down the group

(ii). What would you observe when chlorine water is added to a solution of potassium iodide?

Answer:

A displacement reaction of iodine from its salt to form KCl

(b)(i). Describe a method for the laboratory preparation of chlorine.

Answer:

Using manganese(IV) oxide: When a mixture of conc HCl(aq) and MnO(2) is heated, chlorine is liberated.

\( \scriptsize 4HCl_{(aq)} \: + \: MnO_{2(aq)} \overset{heat}{\rightarrow} MnCl_2 \: + \: 2H_2O_{(l)} \: + \: Cl_{2(g)} \)

(ii). Give any three chemical properties of chlorine.

Answer:

Reaction of chlorine with water e.g. Cl2 + H2O →  HCl + HClO

Reaction of chlorine with alkalis e.g.

3Cl2(g) + 6NaOH(aq) →  NaClO3 + 3NaCl + 3H2O

Reaction as bleaching agent e.g. Cl2 + H2O →  HCl + HClO

(iii). State three uses of a named halogen.

Answer:

Named halogen is chlorine

  1. Chlorine is used as a germicide
  2. It is used as a bleaching agent for cotton, linen, and wood pulp
  3. It is used in the manufacture of PVC
