Evaluation Questions – Hydrocarbons

(1). Define the following terms:

(a). Hydrocarbon

Answer:

Hydrocarbons are organic compounds composed exclusively of hydrogen and carbon atoms.

(b). Homologous series

Answer:

Homologous senses are a family of organic compounds with the same functional group and in which each successive member differs by a – CH2 or mass of 14kg

(c). Isomerism

Answer:

Isomerism: This is the ability of an organic compound of the same molecular formula to form different structural formula.

2(a). Differentiate between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Answer:

Saturated hydrocarbons are compounds containing atoms joined by single bonds only while unsaturated hydrocarbons are those that contain at least a pair of atoms joined by double or triple bonds. (Alkenes – double bond; Alkynes – triple bonds).

(b). State three properties of a homologous series.

Answer:

– Each successive member in the series differs by (-CH2) or 14g

– All members in a series share the same general molecular formula

– All members of a homologous series can be prepared by the same general method.

(c). Draw the structures and the name of the isomers of hexane.
