Topic Content:

  • Configuration and Possible Oxidation States of Hydrogen

Hydrogen is a diatomic gas with 1 electron and 1 proton. It has no neutron in its nucleus. The electronic structure and the shell configuration of hydrogen are given below.

Electronic structure: \( \scriptsize _{1}^{1}\textrm{H} = 1S^1\)

hydrogen
Electronic configuration of hydrogen

Hydrogen shows an oxidation state of +1 in most of its compounds. For example, the oxidation number of hydrogen is +1 in HCl, H2SO4 and H2O. Hydrogen shows the oxidation state of -1 in metallic hydrides – sodium hydrides, magnesium hydrides and so on.
