  • Chemical Properties of Hydrogen Chloride

Physical Properties of Hydrogen Chloride:

(i) Hydrogen chloride is a colourless gas with a sharp irritating smell.

(ii) It turns damp litmus paper red.

(iii) It is about 1.25 times denser than air.

(iv) It is highly soluble in water. Because of its great solubility, it fumes in moist  air .

(v) It dissolves in non-polar solvents like chloroform and toluene.

(vi) In an aqueous solution the compound is extensively dissociated into a hydroxonium ion (H3 O + ) and chloride ion (Cl ); in dilute solutions, the dissociation is essentially complete. Thus, hydrochloric acid is a strong acid.

(vii) It does not support combustion.

Fountain Experiment:

Fountain experiment is used to demonstrate the solubility of hydrogen chloride gas.

Experiment Demonstration:

Fill a dry round-bottomed flask filled with dry Hydrogen chloride gas. Fix a two-holed rubber cork on the mouth of the round-bottomed flask. Fix a jet tube through one hole and a dropper, with a few water drops, through the other hole. Now put the other end of the jet tube in a container containing blue litmus solution.
