Hydrogen chloride gas is colourless but it fumes in moist air. Hydrogen chloride gas turns moist litmus paper from blue to red and moist universal indicator paper to red – it is acidic. Hydrogen chloride gas is highly soluble in water. It dissolves to form hydrochloric acid with pH = 1. It does not support combustion hence, it will put out a lit splint.
