Theory Questions & Answers

1. (a). Describe a method of laboratory preparation of hydrogen chloride gas.

Answer:

Reaction of a chloride, NaCl, with tetraoxosulphate(VI) acid H2SO4.

2NaCl(s) + H2SO4(aq) → Na2SO4(aq) + HCl(g)

(b). (i). State three physical properties of hydrogen chloride gas.

Answer:

1. Hydrogen chloride is a colourless gas with a sharp irritating smell

2. It turns damp litmus paper red

3. It is about 1.25 times denser than air

(ii). State three uses of hydrogen chloride gas.

Answer:

i. Hydrogen chloride is used in the synthesis of chloroethene

ii. It is used in the manufacture of gelatin and glue from the tendon of animals.

iii. It is used in the manufacture of textiles and dyes

2. (a). Give three properties of hydrogen chloride which show it is acidic.

Answer:

i. It reacts with water to produce hydrochloric acid in which almost 100% of the hydrogen chloride molecule ionizes

HCl + H2O → H3O+ + Cl

ii. It reacts with active metal to form salts and liberate hydrogen gas

Zn + HCl(g) → ZnCl2(s) + H2(g)

iii. It reacts with ammonia gas to form a white dense fume of ammonia chloride

HCl(g) + NH3(g) → NH4Cl(s)

(b). Give a laboratory test for hydrogen chloride gas.

Answer:  Laboratory test shows that hydrogen chloride gas turns moist litmus paper from blue to red.
