Theory Questions & Answers

1. (a). Give a laboratory preparation of nitrogen

Answer:  Nitrogen can be prepared from air by removing the other constituents of the air. CO2 is removed by passing the air through caustic soda.

Oxygen is removed by heating the air over copper turnings

Nitrogen is then collected over water.

(b). Describe the industrial preparation of Nitrogen gas

Answer: Nitrogen is prepared in the industry by fractional distillation of liquefied air. Air is collected and filtered to remove dust. The air is then cooled at stages to a temperature of -200ºC.

The air is turned to liquid at -200ºC. At various stages of cooling, water vapour condenses and is removed. CO2 is then removed at about 79ºC. The liquid air is then passed into a fractional column where nitrogen, oxygen, and argon are each separated out. Nitrogen boils out first at the temperature of -196ºC and standard pressure and is collected as liquid nitrogen and stored in a steel cylinder.

2(a). State three properties of nitrogen

Answer:

i. It is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas

ii. It is neutral to moist litmus paper

iii. It is slightly less dense than air.

(b). Name three oxides of nitrogen and give the laboratory preparation of nitrogen(I) oxide

Answer:

Nitrogen(I) oxide

Nitrogen(I) oxide (dinitrogen oxide), N2O, is prepared by gentle heating of ammonium trioxonitrate(V).

The ammonium trioxonitrate(V) decomposes to form steam and nitrogen(I) oxide.

NH4NO3(s) → 2H2O(g) + N2O(g)

Nitrogen(II) oxide: Prepared from the action of dilute (50% concentrated) trioxonitrate(V) acid on copper.

Nitrogen(IV) oxide: Nitrogen(IV) oxide is prepared in the laboratory by heating lead(II) trioxonitrate(V), Pb(NO3)2 strongly.

3. (a). State three physical properties of nitrogen (IV) oxide

Answer:

i. It is a reddish-brown gas

ii. It is readily soluble in water

iii. It is denser than air

(b). State three uses of nitrogen gas

Answer:

i. It is used to make fertilizers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes, and explosives.

ii. Liquid nitrogen is used as a refrigerant

iii. Large quantities of nitrogen is used in the steel industry
