Theory Questions & Answers

1. (a) Give the electronic configuration of oxygen.

Answer: 8O = 1s2, 2s2, 2p4.

(b) Give the oxidation state of oxygen in each of the following compounds.

i. MgO

Answer:  = -2

ii.  CaO

Answer:   = -2

iii. Na2O2

Answer:   = -4

iv. H2O

Answer  = -2

2. (a) Describe the industrial preparation of oxygen.

Answer:

  • Air is collated and filtered to remove dust
  • Air is cooled to a temperature of 200°C to form liquid water vapour condenses and removed
  • CO2 is removed at about 79°C
  • The liquid air is passed into a fractionating column
  • Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Argon are removed at a temperature of -196°C and argon at -183°C while oxygen boils out at -183°C and is collected as liquid.
  • It is then compressed and stored in a strong steel cylinder under the pressure of 100 atm.

b. Describe one laboratory preparation of oxygen.

Answer:

From hydrogen peroxide H2O2(l)

2H2O2(l) →  2H2O(l) + O2(g)

3. (a) Test for oxygen in the Laboratory

Answer: A glowing splint reignites when inserted into the gas.

(b) State three uses of oxygen

Answer:

  • It is used in medicine
  • It is used in welding
  • It is essential for respiration

4. (a) State three chemical properties of oxygen.

Answer:

– It reacts with metals

e.g. 4K(s) + O2(g)  2K2O(s)

– It reacts with non-metals

e.g. S2 + 2O2 2SO2

– It reacts with hydrogen to form water

e.g.  2H2 + O2 2H2O

(b) List four types of oxides, giving an example in each case.

Answer:

Four types of oxygen

Acidic oxides →   H2SO3

Basic oxide →  KOH

Neutral oxide →  CO

Peroxides →  H2O2
