The following are types of advertising:

1. Informative Advertising: It enables members of the public to be aware of new facts or products and services which they have never heard of or seen before. The public can be informed about particular events taking place in the future. Messages on job openings and social activities (wedding events, birthday celebrations, visits of dignitaries, etc) are passed to the public.

2. Persuasive Advertising: This type of advertising invites the public to buy a product or service irrespective of what their attitude may be towards such a product or service, the major aim of persuasive advertising is to create more market for a particular product.

3. Comparative Advertising: This type of advertising seeks to persuade the consumers/public to use a particular product in preference to other competing products. It is used repetitively and can be a tool to break through a monopoly.

4. Mass Advertising: It is used to advertise the general use of goods without being specific to a particular brand. It is organized by producers or distributors of similar products in order to eliminate waste and cut costs.

5 Specific Advertising: It is directed at a specific, target market. It involves the advertising of a particular brand of product or service, through the appropriate media e.g. advertisement of school bags and shoes in an educational magazine.

Methods of Advertising:

1. Direct Advertising: This method of advertising seeks to capture a particular audience or target market. A particular medium that a group likes to visit is used. For instance, children’s products are advertised during cartoon film shows or in children’s magazines.

2. Indirect Advertising: This method focuses on the general public and not a particular target market or group. Goods that are generally used such as rice, detergents, bread, biscuit, milk, etc are advertised through this method.
