Lesson Progress
0% Complete

This is the process of sending data and information from one place to another, using a computer and telephone as the channels of transmission. The sender must be connected to the internet. The receiver of electronic mail messages can only do so using a computer that is also connected to the internet to read the messages. Both the sender and receiver of an e-mail must have an e-mail address through which they can communicate with each other.

Advantages of E-Mail:

1. It is faster than traditional mail facilities within a company.

2. Messages can be stored.

Disadvantages of E-Mail:

1. The system can be overburdened by the sending of junk mail.

2. Both senders and receivers must face the task of clearing obsolete messages from the system periodically.

Evaluation Questions:

  1. What is courier service?
  2. Explain the function of courier services.
  3. Explain the meaning and use of the internet in the world of commerce.
  4. What is the full meaning of e-mail and how does it function?
  5. Compare the courier service with the post office service using only three points.
  6. (a) Who is a common carrier?
    (b) State three functions of each of the following communication agents;
    (i) Post office
    (ii) Telecommunication
    (iii) Courier companies (WASSCE June, 2006)
