Meaning of Transport:

Transportation could be referred to as the various means by which people and goods move from place to place. In commerce, transportation involves the physical movement of goods from the manufacturer to the consumer. Transportation is essential to the development of commerce.

Importance of Transportation to Commerce:

1. It makes it possible for goods and people to move from one place to another.

2. It facilitates home and international trade, thus enhancing socio-economic development in West Africa.

3. It encourages the mass production of goods.

4. It helps to convey raw materials and other capital goods to production sites.

5. It provides employment for people to earn a living.

6. It improves people’s standard of living. It helps consumers to get what they cannot acquire in their own area thereby enhancing their living standard.

7. It influences the location of industries. A good transport network assists in the location of industries.

8. Transportation helps the producers of perishable goods, or those having surplus goods, to reduce wastage by quickly moving the goods to the consumers.
