This is a mixture of direct executive responsibilities with specialists auxiliary services. It resembles the line structure only that the specialists are included in the arrangements.

Advantages of Line and Staff Structure

(i) It enables specialists to give expert advice on technical matters.

(ii) Specialization brings about efficiency.

(iii) It permits line managers to make all major decisions.

(iv) This type of structure allows for cross fertilization of ideas thereby enriching decision making.

(v) It is useful for large organizations.

Disadvantages of Line and Staff Structure

(i) Staff specialists have no line authority and therefore not responsible for what happens.

(ii) Staff specialists may take over the job of line managers.

(iii) It can lean towards centralization of organization.

(iv) It can confuse the organization if functions are not clear.
