Quartiles are the value that divides a given distribution into four equal parts, or quarters, of more or less equal size. It provides information about both the centre and the spread of the data.

Knowing the **lower **and **upper** quartile provides information on how big the spread is and if the dataset is skewed toward one side.

The four equal parts of a quartile include:

**a.** First Quartile Q_{1}.
