     In this lesson and the next, we will be discussing active and passive forms, otherwise called active and passive voices.  To prepare you for the discussion, we will first consider transitive and intransitive verbs.

a. Transitive Verbs:

A transitive verb is a verb which requires an object for its meaning to be understood.

Consider the following sentences:

1. We boiled eggs yesterday.

2. We boiled yesterday.

The verb boiled must always be followed by an object, that is, the thing that was boiled. In the first sentence, the object is eggs. The second sentence is meaningless because of the absence of the object.
