  • A sequence of Tenses

When you were in Senior Secondary One, you studied tense forms. You learnt that when a verb indicates time – present, past, future – it is showing tense.

A Sequence of Tenses:

A sequence of tenses is also known as an agreement of tenses, a succession of tenses, and tense harmony. It has to do with the grammatical rules that govern the agreement between tenses in related clauses or sentences. In this lesson and the next, we will learn about two of the rules:

Rule 1

If the first verb in a sentence or clause is in the present tense, all other verbs in the sentence or clause must also be in the present tense.

Consider the following passage and note the verbs which have been emphasized.
