A prefix is a word element that is added before another word to form a new word. For example, dis is a prefix. You can use it with the words advantage, incline, and approve, thus:

dis + advantage = disadvantage

dis + incline   = disincline

dis + approve = disapprove

some other prefixes include be, con, de, pro, to, ex, ob, re, co, mal, in, il, ir, etc.

There are two types of prefixes: reversative prefixes and preservative prefixes. In this lesson and the next, we will be discussing reservative prefixes-what they are and how they extend words, bringing about new meanings.
