Types of Coasts – Based on Changes in Sea Level:
This classification looks at whether the land has sunk (submerged) or risen (emerged).
During the Ice Age, large amounts of water were frozen in massive ice sheets. This caused the sea levels to drop and affected the coastal areas of North America and Europe. As the climate became warmer, the ice began to melt. As a result, more water flowed into the oceans, causing sea levels to rise.
This increase in ocean water also pressed down on the land near the coasts, causing the land to sink slightly.
These changes in sea level caused some coastal landforms to appear (emerge) above sea level, while others were covered (submerged) by water.
Because of this , two main types of coasts were formed:
- Submergent coasts – where sea level rose or land sank, covering parts of the coast with water.
- Emergent coasts – where land rose or sea level dropped, exposing more land.
