The electoral system is the method or process through which the people of a state elect representatives into the government or political posts.

The electoral system includes the set rules and regulations that guide elections in a state, such as qualification of suffrage, voting procedure, the procedure for calculation, and determination of election results.

Characteristics of an Electoral System:

1. An impartial and independent electoral body should be put in place to organize and conduct elections.

2. As stipulated in the constitution, there should be regular and periodic elections.

3. It is important for the delimitation of the country into constituencies.

4. Qualified adult citizens should exercise their right of voting without any fear of molestation, intimidation and victimization.

5. Counting of votes: This should be made public and with immediate release of results.

6. The people should be properly educated about their political rights, elections and the political system e.t.c.

7. Materials for election, e.g ballot boxes, ballot papers, ink etc. should be provided.
