Topic Content:

  • Determination of Specific Heat Capacity of Liquid using the Method of Mixtures

The process is repeated as explained in the previous topic, only that the specific heat capacity of the solid is known and the water is replaced with the liquid of which the specific heat capacity is to be measured.

The specific heat capacity of the liquid is calculated as below:

Mass of Solid = M (kg)
Temperature of Solid = θ
Mass of empty calorimeter + stirrer = M1 kg
Mass of calorimeter + stirrer + liquid = M2 kg
Mass of liquid = (M2 – M1) kg
Specific heat capacity of Solid = Cs
Specific heat capacity of liquid = Cl
Specific heat capacity of material of the calorimeter = Cc
Initial temperature of liquid & calorimeter =  θ1
Final temperature of mixture =  θ2

Heat lost by solid = Heat gained by liquid + Heat gained by calorimeter + stirrer

Heat lost by solid = MCs (θ – θ2)
