  • Maximum and Minimum Thermometer

This is a type of liquid-in-glass thermometer used by weathermen in meteorological stations to measure the maximum and minimum temperature of the day.

The most commonly used type is the Six’s Combined Maximum and Minimum Thermometer which was invented by James Six.

As shown below, it consists of a U-shaped stem connected to two large bulbs B and D. The two bulbs contain alcohol, although oil of creosote is now more generally used, and both are separated by a column of mercury in the bent portion of the U stem.
