When a stretched string is fixed at both ends, C and D, and when it is plucked slightly in the middle, a transverse wave travels along the vibrating string. There are two progressive waves travelling in opposite directions.

The string cannot move at points C and D, and these points are called Nodes.
Node (N) is a point on a wave where the vibration is permanently at rest.
