What is a Wave?

A wave is a disturbance which travels through a medium and transfers energy from one point to another without permanent displacement of the medium itself. OR Wave is energy in motion usually due to vibrations which may be caused by disturbance.

A wave that requires a material medium for its propagation is called a mechanical wave e.g. sound waves, waves generated in strings, water waves, etc.

A wave that does not require a material medium for its propagation is called an electromagnetic wave e.g. Radio waves, light waves, or heat waves.

Classification of Waves:

Waves are classified into two namely:

(i) Transverse Waves
