Diseases have the following economic effects on livestock production:

  • Mortality: Some diseases lead to the death of some or all the stock in a herd, which is a serious economic loss to the farmer.
  • Loss of Product: Sick animals are unproductive in terms of meat, milk and egg production resulting in a loss to the farmer.
  • Zoonotic Factor: Zoonotic diseases may be transmitted to man by poor handling of infected animals, animal products or through consumption of infected animal products e.g. Anthrax, Tuberculosis, etc.
