Ecological succession refers to the gradual and orderly change of a plant or animal community over a period of time resulting in the establishment of a final, stable, and climax community .
Mature forests and grasslands are examples of climax communities.
There are two major types of succession. Primary Succession and Secondary Succession.
Primary Succession:
Primary succession occurs on bare surfaces which have not been previously inhabited by other biotic communities.
To support primary succession, vegetation must grow first.
