  • The Human Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system consists of ovaries, oviducts, uterus, vagina and vulva.

There are two oval-shaped ovaries situated below each kidney. The ovaries produce ovum/egg, female sex hormones called oestrogen and progesterone which make the wall of the uterus thicken and become suitable for a fertilized ovum. It also influences the development of secondary characteristics in females.

Each ovary is held in position by ligaments, close to the ovary is a funnel-shaped structure known as the fallopian funnel which receives the ovum. 

The fallopian funnel leads to the fallopian tube or oviduct (9-15 cm long). The fertilized egg passes through the tube from the ovary. It is the site of fertilization.

The oviduct opens into a wide muscular tube called the uterus
