Generally, insects go through a series of developmental changes known as metamorphosis.

What is Metamorphosis?

Metamorphosis can be defined as the series of gradual changes in form and shape of an insect from the fertilized egg to the adult.

The development of insects from an egg to an adult can be grouped into:

  • Complete metamorphosis
  • Incomplete metamorphosis

Most species of insects are either females or males and they undergo sexual reproduction. During mating, the sperm of a male insect is transferred to the female insect and stored in a special sac called a sperm receptacle.
