Meaning of Consumer Protection:

Consumer Protection is the action and effort of governments and other organized bodies in response to users’ complaints about goods and services in order to ensure that they derive satisfaction. The consumer needs protection from harmful and dangerous products and also to ensure that the standard and quality of the goods purchased are high.

A consumer is that individual who purchases goods for his personal use. He or she buys goods and services for his or her satisfaction.

Consumers have the following rights;

1. Safe and hygienic products.

2. Right to be heard.

3. Right to choose.

4. Right to seek redress.

5. Right to a healthy environment.

6. Right to getting value for money.

7. Right to the good things of life.

8. Right to be informed.

Consumerism 

These are the actions of individuals and governments in response to consumer dissatisfaction in exchange relationships.

Consumerism is both (a) a protest against the perceived injustice and (b) effort to remedy those injustices.

Consumer sovereignty 

This concept states that under a system of free enterprises; it is the consumer that decides the type of goods and services that shall be produced and in what quantities. It states that consumers are KINGS.

Consumer groups

These are a small group of people who make a study of prices and the quality of goods sold in their own locality and then make recommendations for their members.

Need/Reasons for Consumer Protection 

The following are some of the major reasons for consumer protection

1. Deceptive Weight and Measures: Consumers should be protected by producers and sellers against false or incorrect weights and measures. In order to avoid exploitation, the use of standard measures should be adopted.

2. False And Misleading Advertising: False Advertising may mislead the consumer into buying goods which are not suitable for their needs. Correct information should be given to consumers to enable them to make the correct choices.

3. Exploitation: The manufacturers/producers should protect the consumers of their products from being cheated.

4. Protection from Dangerous and Harmful Goods: The manufacturers and sellers should offer and make hygienic goods available to the consumers contaminated and expired goods should not be sold to the consumers.

5. Failure to Honour Guarantees and Warranties: Producers or suppliers sometimes fail to honour guarantees and warranties promised to the consumers.

6. Unreasonable High Price: The consumer should be protected because of the issue of exorbitant prices being charged by the producers and sellers.

7. Prevention of substandard or inferior goods.
