Herbert Macaulay

This party was formed, in June 1923, under the leadership of Herbert Macaulay, as a result of the elective principle introduced in Nigeria by the Clifford Constitution, to contest for the three seats allocated to Lagos in the legislative council.

Objectives of NNDP:

1. To secure higher and better positions for Africans in the Civil Service.

2. To elect Lagos members to the legislative council.

3. To foster higher education and introduce compulsory primary education in Nigeria.

4. To secure local self-government and municipal status for Lagos.

5. To ensure free and fair trade in Nigeria and equal treatment for Nigerian traders and producers with their European counterparts.

6. To establish branches of the party in all parts of Nigeria.

7. To recognise and work hand-in-hand with the National Congress of British West Africa for all its programmes.

8. To develop rapidly the natural resources of Nigeria under the control of private enterprises.

Membership/Supporters of the Party (NNDP):

Membership of The Party (NNDP) was on an individual basis. Members were drawn from all works of life.

Leadership of the Party (NNDP)

The first President of the party was Egerton Shyngle, a Gambian, by birth and a prominent barrister in Lagos. The leader of the party was Herbert Macaulay. The first honourary Secretary of the Party was T. H. Jackson. Other notable members were J.C. Zizer and Dr C.C. Adeniyi Jones.

Finance of NNDP:

The Party’s funding came from contributions of members, registration fees and freewill donations from members. The party also realized funds from contributions by Lagos Market Women and Eshugbayi, the Eleko of Lagos.
