Evaluation Questions – Development of Political Parties in Nigeria II

Question

1. Enumerate five (5) achievements and the challenges of NNDP

Answer:

Achievements of NNDP:

  • Electoral Victory: The party won all the seats allocated to Lagos in the legislative council in the elections of 1923, 1928 and 1933. It also won the elections into the Lagos town council during the same period.
  • It Fostered Political Education in the Country, most especially in Lagos.
  • Its activities led to further constitutional reforms in Nigeria.
  • It actualised the elective principle as the party contested elections in 1923, 1928 and 1933.
  • It contributed to the restoration of Eleko who had been deposited by the colonial government.
  • It encouraged the formation of other political parties e.g. LYM, NCNC, etc.
  • NNDP provided the machinery for recruiting and training political leaders.
  • It was the first political party to be formed in Nigeria (June 24, 1923) under the leadership of Herbert Macaulay.
  • The party served as a link between the people (Lagosians) and the Colonial government.
  • It was responsible for upgrading Lagos Town Council.

Weaknesses of NNDP:

  • The party failed to have branches outside Lagos. It was a Lagos-based party.
  • It was a tribal party. The party was dominated by Yorubas.
  • The leadership of the party was faulty. The leader, Herbert Macaulay did not want to share leadership with rival educated people.
  • The policies of the colonial government negatively affected the party.
  • The party lacked a strong financial base or support.
  • The party was dominated by foreign-based Nigerians.
  • The formation of NYM, which was more dynamic, led to the eventual collapse of NNDP.
