  • Development of NCNC
  • Objectives of the Party (NCNC)
  • Organization Structure of NCNC
  • Leadership of NCNC
  • Finance of NCNC

The National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) was formed in 1944 as a result of the Nigerian Union of Students’ call for a “Mass meeting” at Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos, to consider the formation of a representative national committee and other issues. At that meeting, The NCNC was formed with Herbert Macaulay as the President and Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe as the General Secretary of the party.

By January 1945, about 87 unions had joined the council, including three (3) unions from ‘Cameroons’. The name included ‘Cameroons’ because Cameroon had become an administrative part of Nigeria in 1945. The name changed to National Council for Nigerian Citizens following the exit of Southern Cameroon.

Development of NCNC:

  • The party developed as a result of the split within NYM over the representation of the party in the legislative council to fill the vacuum created by the registration of Dr. Kofo Abayomi.
