The Nigerian military coup of 1983 took place on 31st December of that year. It led to the ousting of the democratically elected government of President Shehu Shagari and the installation of Major General Muhammadu Buhari as head of state and It was coordinated by key officers of the Nigerian military.

General Muhammadu Buhari overthrew President Shehu Shagari in 1983.

Reasons/Causes of Military Coup on 31/12/1983):

1. Mal-administration by Shehu Shagari’s government made the military intervene.

2. Squandering of the nation’s wealth and mismanagement of the national resources are other reasons.

3. Corruption, greed and the ostentation style of the political leaders are other reasons.

4. Failure of the “Green Revolution”. Its effort to boost food production in Nigeria. It was just a condict-pipe to siphon the national economy.

5. Public indiscipline and general acts of lawlessness are other reasons. There was
