  • Reasons for Military Coup in 1975 in Nigeria
  • Structure of Government 1975 – 1979

(Military Rule of General Murtala Mohammed/General Olusegun Obasanjo’s Regime 1975- 1979):

General Murtala Mohammed Murtala took power as the Military Head of State On 29th July 1975, when General Yakubu Gowon was overthrown in a non-violent coup. He ruled over Nigeria from 30 July 1975 until his assassination on 13 February 1976. President Obasanjo was appointed as the head of state by the Supreme Military Council following the assassination of military ruler General Murtala Muhammed in 1976.

Reasons for Military Coup in 1975 in Nigeria:

1. There was an alleged high level of corruption against some key government officials.

2. Gowon’s postponement of the handover date to civilian rule. He said that October 1st, 1976 which he promised earlier was no longer possible.
