Organization of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN):

  • The party had the national executive committee and state executive committee.
  • There were presidential liaison offices in eighteen (18) states apart from Lagos, as it is close to the seat of the Federal government.
  • It had branches all over the country; in States, LGAs, Villages and Wards.
  • The headquarters was in Lagos.
  • It had a Federal executive council and Parliamentary council in each state of the Federation.
  • The Party had central Working Committees and ad hoc committees.

Sources of Funds of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN):

1. It realised funds from registration and subscription fees of members.
2. Donations from members and supporters.
3. Overdraft from banks and governments.
4. Grants from the Federal government as take-off grants.

Achievements of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN):

  • It was a national party as the membership cut across the different states of the Federation.
  • The National Party of Nigeria (NPN) won the 1979 and 1983 General Elections. It won 167 seats in the House of Representatives and thirty-six (36) seats in the Senate in 1979.
  • It won gubernatorial elections in seven (7) states in 1979 and twelve (12) States in 1983.
  • It produced the first executive president in Nigeria.
  • The National Party of Nigeria (NPN) provided political awareness in Nigeria.
  • It helped to recruit political leaders to political offices in government and within the Party.
  • It established more unity schools and more housing estates.
  • It established rolling mills e.g. Kastina, Osogbo, and Itakpe.

Failures of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN):

  • The party proposed many agendas which it failed to accomplish, including Housing Schemes.
  • The Party was accused of corruption. It accumulated lots of debts for the country.
  • The party was accused of electoral malpractices. It was also accused of rigging elections in 1983.
  • The Party misappropriated Public Funds. There were records of financial recklessness and irresponsibility because the elitist party was not in touch with realities on ground.
