Example:

Draw the graph of the line represented by the equation

4x + 2y = 5

Solution

Make a table of values

x012
y\( \scriptsize2 \normalsize \frac {1}{2}\)\( \frac {1}{2}\)\( \scriptsize – 1 \normalsize \frac {1}{2}\)

Substitute the values of x into the equation 4x + 2y = 5

When x = 0,

4(0) + 2y = 5

∴ y = \(\scriptsize 2 \frac {1}{2} \)

X = 1,

4(1)+2y = 5

2y = 5 – 4

2y = 1

∴ y = \( \frac {1}{2} \)

x = 2,

4(2) +2y = 5

8 +2y = 5

2y = 5 – 8

2y = 5 – 8

2y = -3

∴ y = \( \frac {-3}{2} \\ \; = \scriptsize – 1 \frac {1}{2} \)
