As a result of the demand for stable electricity and the energy crisis in the country, the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) was formed. The essence of the body is for electricity generation which could lead to development in health, agriculture, industry science and technology.

In 2007, two technical committees were set up to construct a nuclear power plant to be supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations regulatory body.
