What is the energy released when the particles of uranium -237 are separated

Mass of uranium -237.0440u, mass of proton = 1.0073u

Mass of neutron = 1.0087u, 1u= 931Mev, 1ev = 1.6 x 10o19J

Solution

Mass defect, ∆m = mass of proton + mass of neutron – mass of uranium

= (92 x 1.0073 + 145 x 1.0087) – 237.0440

= (92.6716 + 146.2615) – 237.0440

= 238.9331 – 2370440

= 1.8891u

IU = 931mev

= 1.8891 x 931

    = 1758.7521mev

Iev = 1758.7521 x 1.6 x 10-19 x 106

= 2.814 x 10-10J
